VoIP FAQ
- Q: What is VoIP?
- VoIP refers to the transmission of voice traffic routed over online networks using the Internet Protocol — the same IP that serves as the communication method for all Internet traffic, including e-mail, instant messages and Web pages.
- Q: Can I call someone using VoIP if they have a land line?
- If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination.
- Q: Why is it cheaper than traditional options?
- VoIP calls are just another unregulated application on the Internet, no different from e-mails, instant messages or Web pages, which can all be distributed for free between Internet-connected machines. Those include computers and wireless devices, such as cell phones and handhelds, that are set up to receive online information.
- Q: What are some advantages of VoIP?
- Some VoIP services offer features and services that are not available with a traditional phone, or are available but require an additional fee.
- Q: What do you need to use VoIP?
- A broadband connection is a VoIP requirement. The faster your connection, the better the call quality will be. VoIP also can power videoconferencing services, or lead to specialized new applications — like checking voice mail from a Web page or programming call-forwarding so calls from work get routed to voice mail while calls from a VIP in your life go to your cell phone.
- Q: Does my computer have to be turned on?
- Only if your service requires you to make calls using your computer. All VoIP services require your broadband Internet connection to be active.
